Abstract
1410222 Alkoxybenzylidene - alkylanilines XEROX CORP 12 Sept 1972 [13 Sept 1971] 42320/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division H4] Compounds which are liquid crystalline and have the formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are alkyl groups, and the combination of R 1 and R 2 is chosen from R 1 = C 3 H 7 and R 2 =C 4 H 9 ; R 1 =C 4 H 9 and R 2 =C 4 H 9 ; R 1 =C 5 H 11 and R 2 =C 4 H 9 ; R 1 =C 6 H 13 and R 2 =C 4 H 9 ; R 1 =C 7 H 15 and R 2 =C 4 H 9 ; R 1 =C 4 H 9 and R 2 =CH 3 ; R 1 =C 4 H 9 and R 2 =C 2 H 5 ; and R 1 = C 5 H 11 and R 2 = CH 3 , are obtained by condensing together an appropriate p-n-alkoxybenzaldehyde and an appropriate p-n-alkylaniline in refluxing ethanol or isopropanol, and in the absence of glacial acetic acid or acetic acid as condensation catalyst. Examples are given for the preparation of the compounds. They are useful in electro-optical apparatus for producing light-scattering effects.
