Abstract
1409810 Ratchet clutches SSS PATENTS Ltd 22 Oct 1973 [31 Oct 1972] 50203/72 Heading F2C In a synchro self-shifting clutch wherein a pawl and ratchet mechanism 5, 18 between an intermediate member 14 and one clutch member 1 initiates clutch engagement by moving the intermediate member 14 helically along another clutch member 6 to bring clutch teeth 16 on the intermediate member into precise interengagement with teeth 4 on the clutch member 1, a locking ring 26 carried by the intermediate member 14 or the clutch member 6 coacts with teeth 30 on the clutch member 6 or intermediate member 14 to lock the clutch engaged. The locking ring 26 is rotatable against the bias of a spring 39 relative to the intermediate member 14 and, in the clutch disengaged condition, has teeth 29 meshed with the teeth 30. During clutch engagement helical movement of the intermediate member 14 causes the latter to rotate relative to the locking ring 26 and clutch member 6 so that, when the teeth 29 disengage from the teeth 30, the springs 39 rotate the locking ring 26 relative to the clutch member 6 to a position in which the teeth 29, 30 are aligned to prevent clutch disengagement. When the clutch is engaged liquid is fed through ducts 36, 33, 32, 31, 38, 37, to a chamber 28 between the intermediate member 14 and locking ring 26. When the clutch member 6 exceeds a predetermined speed the centrifugal pressure developed in the chamber 28 rotates the locking ring 26 to a position in which the teeth 29, 30 can interengage and thus permit normal clutch disengagement on overrun. The clutch member 6, 1 may be respectively connected to a gas turbine and a generator. Initial rotation of the generator shaft 3 in a direction opposite to its normal direction of rotation engages the clutch which is locked engaged to permit subsequent rotation of the generator shaft in its normal direction of rotation to be transmitted to the gas turbine for starting purposes. When the gas turbine is started and drives the generator at a speed greater than the predetermined speed, the clutch is automatically unlocked to permit normal operation.
