Abstract

1409274 Continuous moulding process SEKISUI KAGAKU KOGYO KK 28 Sept 1972 [2 Oct 1971 9 May 1972 29 Aug 1972] 44885/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] A method for continuously producing non- combustible shaped articles comprises feeding a mixture comprising (a) 100 parts by weight of a powder of silicon or a silicon alloy, (b) 100- 2000 parts by weight of porous or hollow particles of a thermally stable inorganic compound, (c) 100-1200 parts by weight of an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate and (d) a positive amount up to 80 parts by weight per 100 parts of the total of (a), (b) and (c) of a fire-proofing agent into a compression space formed between the outside surface of an endless belt 11 (Fig. 1), the inside surface of which contacts compression rolls 3 to 10, and a feed plate 17 moving at substantially the same speed as the endless belt and in the same direction as that part of the endless belt contacting the mixture, and thereafter introducing the shaped article into reaction chambers 29, 30 and 31 maintained at 15-120‹ C. in succession so as to foam and solidify the shaped mixture. The belt surface of the endless belt gradually compresses the shaping material 2 fed from the hopper 1 while moving it. The feed plate 17 may be a hard flat plate or an endless belt supported by a plurality of rollers. The reaction chambers 29 and 30 include a pipe for supplying a heating or cooling medium. Within the reaction chambers alkali metal hydroxide formed by the hydrolysis of the alkali metal silicate within the shaped article reacts with silicon or silicon in the silicon alloy to evolve hydrogen gas which causes the foaming of the shaped article. Numerous examples of ingredients (a), (b) (c) and (d) are specified (see Division C3) and in addition the mixture may also contain a fibrous material.
