1409171 Loading photographic film EASTMAN KODAK CO 1 Feb 1973 [2 Feb 1972] 5116/73 Heading G2X A photographic film scroll 79 is loaded into an assembled, unsealed film cartridge 10 having spaced cylindrical supply amd take-up compartments 15, 17 formed by a body portion 11 which defines a major portion of the supply compartment and a cover portion 13 which defines separable end walls of the compartments, by (a) holding the respective cartridge portions 11, 13, (b) disassembling the cartridge by separating these portions in the direction of the axis A of the supply chamber 15 and then in a direction out of alignment with axis A to clear the axial end of compartment 15, (c) axially inserting the film scroll in compartment 15, and (d) reassembling the cartridge by aligning the separated cartridge portions on axis A and bringing them together along the axis. An apparatus for effecting this comprises a pair of members 49, 51 for clamping the cartridge body and cover portion respectively which members are movable between a first and second positions in which the cartridge is assembled and disassembled respectively, means (in particular rods 53 and 57 operated by a cam surface 55, and a actuator 59 and control 61, respectively) for moving the clamps and cartridge portions between these positions, and a means (in particular a mandrel 81 and an advance 83) for inserting the scroll in the disassembled cartridge at the second position. Preferably, a plurality of clamping devices are passed through a series of stations for effecting the above steps Fig. 4 (not shown). The cartridges may be supplied from a chute 75 and pushed into the clamp by a cam 79 Fig. 4 (not shown); a blowers 60 and 85 may be used to hold the take-up core 19 in the take-up compartment of the disassembled cartridge, and to blow the leader of the film scroll against core 19 so that it can be heat-sealed thereon.
