Abstract
1408765 Resistance heater TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc 2 Nov 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 50555/72 Heading H5H A heater for use submerged in liquid or in a moisture laden atmosphere comprises a P.T.C. or other poorly thermally conductive ceramic heating resistor 12 attached to a thermally conductive plate 14, the resistor 12 and plate 14 being received in a pocket 36 of a flexible heatconducting foil 38 which extends beyond the pocket 36 and is electrically isolated from the resistor 12. As shown, P.T.C. resistor 12 which may be formed of Ba .997 La .033 TiO 3 ; BaSrTiO 3 or BaPbTiO 3 , has flame sprayed aluminium ohmic contact layers 16, 18 on opposed surfaces. A copper layer 20 formed by flame spraying or any conventional technique is applied to layer 18 and a supply lead L2 is soldered thereto. The plate 14 may be of copper and is secured to the aluminium layer 16 by a layer 22 of epoxy resin loaded with 60 to 70% silver or by a tin solder layer in which case the surface of layer 16 is covered with copper. The copper plate 14 is provided with deformable ears to engage a supply lead L1. The above assembly is housed in a thermally conductive housing 30 of aluminium, a double side adhesive polyester film 32 serving to insulate the assembly from the housing 30. If the housing is thermally conducting but electrically insulating, the film 32 is not needed. The housing 30 is filled with a thermally conducting, electrically insulating potting compound 34 to seal it to liquids. The housing is accommodated in a pocket 36 formed between two aluminium foils 38 provided with adhesive on their facing surfaces. The heat dissipating plate 14 and foils 38 help reduce "thermal banding" in the P.T.C. resistor 12. In Figs. 6-8 (not shown), housing 30 is replaced by a heat shrunk irradiated polyolefin housing filled with silicon rubber sealant. In Fig. 9 (not shown), several heating resistors 12 and their associated conductive layers are mounted on a common heat dissipating plate and joined in parallel. The assembly in a common housing is mounted in a pocket in a flexible heat conducting foil. The heater may be used to maintain the compressor temperature of an air conditioner above the condenser temperature or for heating oil in compressor and engine sumps. The foil has an adhesive backing for securing it to a surface to be heated.
