Abstract
1408497 Reciprocating pumps YOSHINO KOGYOSHO CO Ltd 10 April 1973 [15 April 1972 17 April 1972 (2) 17 Feb 1973 19 Feb 1973] 17220/73 Heading F1A A hand-actuated spray pump, e.g. for hair spray or perfume, comprises a reservoir 20 closed by a removable cover 12 carrying a pump cylinder 30 with a dip tube 36 and inlet check valve 40, a piston 57 being moved on its upward suction stroke by rotating a spray head assembly 13 relative to reservoir 20, assembly 13 being connected by splined sleeve 84 to a slide member 58 carrying piston 57 and formed with inter-connected axial and inclined grooves 104 engaged by balls 102 which also engage axial grooves 100 in cover extension 28 to translate the rotary movement of assembly 13 into upward movement of piston 57, a spring 87 acting to move piston 57 downwardly on its discharge stroke when a spray button 150 is depressed to open discharge valve 63, a valve mechanism being provided to cut off the spray immediately before the pressurized liquid in cylinder 30 is exhausted. The spray cut-off is effected either by venting the cylinder or by closing the piston discharge passage. As shown, the valve mechanism is constituted by a rigid discharge tube 62 cooperating with an aperture 60 in the piston ring 52, the ring 52 moving out of sealing contact with tube 62 just before the end of the delivery stroke so that the cylinder is vented via aperture 60 and ports 162, 164 to the reservoir. A valve 158 maintains atmospheric pressure in the reservoir. In Fig.6 (not shown), the discharge tube is flexible and fixed to the piston, and a projection (196) on a resilient valve sleeve (198) is engaged by the piston to open a vent port (188), the hinged inlet check valve being integral with the sleeve (198). In Fig.8 (not shown), the sleeve (198') and port also function as the inlet check valve. In Fig.9 (not shown), a resilient cup member (204) in the cylinder bottom incorporates the hinged inlet valve and its side walls control vent ports (210), the side walls being deformed by the piston to open the ports. In Fig.10 (not shown), a spring- loaded valve member (220) is slidable within the piston bore and is displaced by a projection (234) on the inlet valve to open a vent port (162). In Fig.11 (not shown), the piston bore valve member (220') has a projection (220b') which engages the inlet valve to open the vent port. In Fig.12 (not shown), resilient legs (52a) on the piston move a spring-loaded sleeve valve (242) controlling vent ports (210). In Fig.13 (not shown), a rigid discharge tube (62) is closed at its lower end and has side ports which are closed by the piston ring (52) just before the end of the discharge stroke. In Figs.15 and 16 (not shown), valve members (254c), (254a) in the cylinder close the discharge passage in the piston towards the end of the discharge stroke. In Fig.17 (not shown), a spring-loaded ball valve (274) in the piston passage opens when the cylinder pressure falls below a predetermined level. In Fig.18 (not shown), the lower end of the piston projects so as to sealingly engage the inlet valve leaving a dead volume of cylinder.
