Abstract
1408379 Shot peening SANDVIK AB KRAFTWERK UNION AG and MANNESMANN ROHREN-WERKE AG 20 May 1974 [30 May 1973] 22472/74 Heading B3D A method of shot peening the external surface of a tube 10 that is partly straight 20, 22 and partly curved 21, such as a U-shaped tube for a heat exchanger, using a set 15 of shot peening nozzle 16 arranged around and directed towards the tube, comprises, for shot peening a straight portion of the tube, holding the nozzle set stationary and moving the tube in a straight path with the straight portion passing axially through the nozzle set, and, for shot peening a curved portion of the tube, holding the tube stationary and moving the nozzle set along the curved portion. In a device for carrying out the method, the tube 10 is supported by rollers 11 and gripped by an arm 12 on a sledge 13 movable along a guide 14. The nozzle set 15 has a number of shot peening nozzles 16 spaced around a central area and carried by a bracket 17 movable about a vertical axis. In use, the sledge 13 is moved along the guide 14 so that the straight portion 20 passes axially of the nozzle set which effects peening by blowing glass beads against the surface of the tube to introduce compressive stresses in the surface. When the tube reaches the position shown dotted, the sledge 13 is stopped, the arm 12 is lowered, and the bracket 17 is swung about axis 18 to shot peen the curved portion 21 of the tube. When the nozzle set reaches the position 15a, the sledge is moved to its original position so that the straight portion 22 is shot peened. The set of nozzles is adjustable along bracket 17 to the radius of curvature of the moved portion 21. The sledge device may be placed above the tube. In order to distribute the shot peening effected by the nozzles, alternate nozzles are inclined at a small angle in opposite directions from a plane containing the nozzle set.
