Abstract

1408153 Axial-flow fans ROLLS-ROYCE (1971) Ltd 17 Jan 1973 [27 Jan 1972] 3903/72 Heading F1C A mechanism for varying the pitch of a blade of an axial-flow machine rotor is mounted to rotate with the rotor and includes a piston and cylinder which are hydraulically movable relative to one another, the piston or the cylinder being connected to means adapted to actuate a pair of cam plates having oppositely inclined cam surfaces so that movement of the piston or cylinder rotates the cam plates in opposite directions, the rotation being transmitted to means engaging the rotor blade so as to rotate the blade on its longitudinal axis, the piston and cylinder being positioned so that the piston and/or cylinder is movable under centrifugal forces to produce torque in the mechanismopposing the centrifugal twisting moment exerted on the blade during rotation of the rotor. The roots 14 of the variable-pitch fan rotor blades of a gas turbine engine are each splined to a member 15 which is journalled in the rotor disc 16 via a bearing 17 and carries a bevel pinion 18. A hydraulically actuated piston 21 within a radially extending cylinder 20 acts via rollers 32, 33, 34 and cam plates 35, 36, 37 to twin bevel gears 47, 48 in opposite directions, thereby turning the fan blades in unison via the bevel pinions 18. The centrifugal force acting on the piston 21 and tending to move it radially outwards produces a torque on each bevel pinion 18 which balances the inherent centrifugal twisting moment tending to feather the corresponding fan blade.
