Abstract

1408090 Machinery guards; grinding LANDIS TOOL CO 28 Dec 1973 [29 Dec 1972] 59973/73 Heading B3D [Also in Division F2] A plunge-type grinding machine 10 includes a cylindrical workpiece loader assembly drum 44 located within an opening in a front wall 33 of an armoured protective machine casing 34 surrounding the grinding wheel 40, the loader assembly drum 44 being turnable in the wall opening between a loading/unloading position (Fig. 4) and a grinding position (Fig. 3) such that the opening is closed at these positions and all positions therebetween to protect the operator from projected swarf, or high speed fragments of the grinding wheel 40 in the event of it exploding. Turning of the loader assembly drum 44 between the above positions is effected by a selectively operable fluid piston/cylinder motor 60, 58. A sliable viewing door 88 at the top of the casing 33, 34 enables the operator to view the grinding zone during operation, a switch 89 on the top wall 86 being closed by a lug 90 integral on the viewing door 88 when the viewing door is opened, to actuate the grinding machine controls 92 to reduce the speed of the grinding wheel to half-speed to minimize danger of explosion of the grinding wheel.
