Abstract

1408082 Coated fabrics IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 Dec 1973 [4 Jan 1973 (2)] 490/73 and 492/73 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C4 Dl and D2] A filament structure e.g. yarn, tow, staple fibre, knitted, woven and non-woven (e.g. needle-punched) fabric, comprises one or more oriented conjugate filaments wherein the component of lower softening temperature of the or each filament has finely divided electrically non-conductive particles penetrating its outer surface which modify the physical and/or chemical properties of the or each filament. The average particle size is preferably less than 5 microns and the depth of penetration is preferably in the range 0.1-4 microns. The particles may be luminous particles, metal oxides, colourants, phosphorescent particles, water repellent particles or siliceous earths. The particles are adhered by a method including the steps of heating the filaments to a temperature above the softening temperature of the lower softening component and coating with the finely divided particles either simultaneously or sequentially. The coated filaments may be further heat treated and/or washed. The coating of the filaments may be accomplished by passage through a hot bath of the particles a hot fluidised suspension or a suspension of the particles. The conjugate filaments may be side-by-side, sheath/core or multilobal type filaments. In particular embodiments, the filaments are treated with hydrophobic silica particles to give a water-repellent structure, or with alumina particles to give an abrasive structure. The filaments are preferably polyester or polyamide or a combination thereof, e.g. filaments with a polyethylene terephthalate core and polyethylene terephthalate/adipate copolymer or polyethylene terephthalate/isophthalate copolymer or nylon 6/ nylon 6.6 copolymer sheath, or with a nylon 6 core and nylon 6/nylon 6.6 copolymer sheath.
