Abstract

1407837 Coated products KANSAI PAINT CO LTD 6 Oct 1972 [11 Oct 1971] 46085/72 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] A precoated metal sheet for use in metal working is produced by applying to a base sheet of metal a thermosetting resin composition, hardening the coating to a semi-hardened state having a tackiness 'of 2.0-40 g/cm width at a temperature of 25‹C and at a relative humidity of 75% according to a test details of which are given, and adhering to the semihardened resin a polyolefin film, e.g. of polyethylene or polypropylene. After shaping of the precoated metal sheet the polyolefin sheet may be peeled off and the semi-hardened resin hardened. The metal sheet may be of mild steel, aluminium, chromium plated steel or zinc-plated steel. The thermosetting resin composition may comprise (a) an acrylic resin, melamine-formaldehyde resin and/or epoxy resin, (b) an alkyl resin modified with a non- drying oil or fatty acid and a melamine-formaldehyde resin, (c) an epoxy resin and a butyl etherified phenol- or urea-formaldehyde resin or (d) an oil free polyester resin and a melamine-formaldehyde resin modified with a C 1-4 monoalcohol. The composition may also comprises an extender pigment, a colouring pigment, a plasticiser and a solvent. The thermosetting resin may be converted to a semi-hardened state by heating at 70‹-190‹C for 30-90 seconds. The metal sheet may be treated with a primer coating, e.g. an epoxy resin or vinyl resin composition, which is hardened prior to application of the thermosetting resin composition. The epoxy resin primer composition may also contain a melamine, urea or phenolic resin a pigment and a solvent, and the vinyl resin primer composition may comprise a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, an epoxy resin, a phenolic resin, a pigment and a solvent.
