Abstract

1406733 Wire connectors MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 1 March 1973 [2 March 1972 (2)] 10086/73 Heading H2E A connector 10 for making electrical connection between wires includes a resilient contact 12 having wire-engaging fingers 14 and an insulating body 16 having wire-receiving cavities 18 which extend from openings 20 to an opposite wall 22 and are traversed by slots 24 for receiving the fingers of the contact 12 when pressed into engagement with the wires. The wire-receiving cavities 18 are open at 23 to a first surface 26 of the body between the slots 24 and the end wall 22 for inspection of the wire positions during and after assembly. A cover 30 pivotally mounted on the body 16 has a second surface 34 which will completely cover the first surface 26 of the body. The body 16 and cover 30, made of a polymeric material, have an integrally-formed unitary hinge portion 32 including at least two round-based V-grooves 42 defining at least one triangular segment 44. When the cover 30 is closed the total angular bend of 180 degrees is shared between the thin flexible hinge sections at the bases of the grooves 42, for the avoidance of excessive bending strains. The cover 30 may be latched when closed by engagement of a hook 36 on the cover behind a lip 38 formed on the body 16. A temporary friction grip for the wires during assembly may be provided by slightly tapering the cavities 18 in the inspection region 23 towards the end wall 22.
