Abstract

1406217 Measuring displacements electrically NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 8 Nov 1972 [16 Nov 1971] 53149/71 Heading G1N A linear displacement transducer comprises a series of parallel conductors 10, Fig.1, connected to a 3-phase A.C. supply to produce a linear developed 3-phase magnetic field, in which is located a base plate 18 carrying two elongate coils 14, 16 with their long sides arranged parallel to the magnetic lines of force. Hence no EMF is induced in these sides and the EMF's in the end parts are neutralized by connecting coils 14, 16 in series. A loop 20 of magnetic material is disposed round the adjacent long sides of coils 14, 16 and is skewed so that it extends diagonally between two adjacent conductors 10. Thus a current is induced in coil 20 which induces a voltage in coils 14, 16, whose phase is indicative of the position of coil 20 within one pitch of six conductors 10. The coil 20 is attached by a rod 26 to a test member whose longitudinal position is therefore indicated by the phase of the voltage in coils 14, 16. Other embodiments are described using a different magnetic member 20 and a single coil 14, 16.
