Abstract

1405316 Mixing; dissolving K SAUERWEIN 2 July 1973 [1 July 1972] 31447/73 Heading B1C [Also in Division G6] In a method of and apparatus for marking intermittently or continuously a fluent material with a radioactive tracer, an isotope generator 1 is charged with a radioactive substance which continuously produces a relatively shortlife radioactive daughter substance, which is dissolved by solvent fed intermittently or continuously under pressure as by a metering pump or portioning pipette 1c or valve 1d to form an isotope carrier solution; this is fed to a reservoir 2 from which it is supplied to the fluent material intermittently or continuously by a delivery valve 3. In modification the isotope carrier may be fed to a mixing vessel 4 in which may be added a pH modifier, or a complex-former to prevent adsorption of the isotope on to the walls of the apparatus, or on to any solids in a liquid to be marked. The isotope may be extracted into a gas by heating the vessel 4 and supplying the gas thereto, or with an organic solvent from an aqueous solvent in an extraction column 7. In examples an aluminium sulphate solution employed in paper making is marked with an aqueous gallium-68/ rhodimine-B complex; a petroleum product with an indium-113/sodium benzoate complex in n-arryl alcohol; and a gas with krypton- 83 in nitrogen. The solvent may be supplied, and the isotope carrier solution may be discharged to the material to be marked by manual operation or by controlling the pumps and valves in accordance with a preset programme.
