1405038 Preparation of manganous sulphate solution MITSUI MINING & SMELTING CO Ltd 26 July 1973 35645/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] A process for the continuous preparation of an aqueous manganous sulphate solution comprises leaching in a core-type leaching vessel powdered manganese carbonate ore or powdered reducing roast of manganese oxide ore with an aqueous sulphuric acid solution containing an excess of sulphuric acid in the presence of manganese dioxide and optionally a soluble ferrous salt in an amount of 1-3 g./l., calculated as Fe and based on the aqueous sulphuric acid solution, while circulating a part of the contents of the vessel from the bottom to the top within the vessel, transferring the overflowing effluent to one or a series of two or more subsequent leaching vessels, continuing further the leaching, introducing successively the effluent from the last leaching vessel into one or a series of two or more neutralizing vessels, neutralizing the effluent with a neutralizing agent to maintain a pH value of effluent at 5-6, allowing the neutralization to terminate and filtering the effluent from the last neutralization vessel. It is preferred to carry out the leaching using an ore to sulphuric acid ratio of 1 : 6-9 wt./vol., a spent electrolyte containing sulphuric acid from the electrolysis process for the production of manganese dioxide in place of sulphuric acid, a leaching temperature of 75-85‹ C. and calcium carbonate is a suitable neutralizing agent. The use of a core-type leaching vessel ensures a prolonged extraction time and minimized foaming problems.
