Abstract

1404686 Nuclear reactors WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 18 May 1973 [2 June 1972] 23735/73 Heading G6C [Also in Division F2] A nuclear reactor (e.g. PWR) has emergency coolant inlet piping connected to coolant dispensing means mounted in the core, said dispensing means being constructed for spraying emergency coolant against fuel elements and constituted by tubular structural members of first elements. Emergency coolant accumulators 58 (Fig. 4) containing located water are connectable via check valves 59 to pressure vessel inlet piping 60 to supply the coolant to risers 62, 92 leading to an above-core manifold 64 from which branch lines (66) (Figs. 2 and 6, not shown) lead to pass the coolant to pipes (116, 118) connected to downcomers. Selected downcomers 122 mount thermocouple guides (Figs. 7A, 7B) containing thermocouples enabling the average coolant temperature of coolant discharging from fuel elements to be measured. The base of such a downcomer mounts a coolant mixer cup 190 having a central inlet and outer inlets 192 leading to a mixing chamber opening to a chamber 188 containing the thermocouple 186. The monitered coolant discharges via apertures 194. The thermocouple guide tube 140 is received within an outer tube 143 spaced within the downcomer 122 by apertured spacers 166. Emergency coolant passes from the base of the downcomer via vertical passages 172 and horizontal passages 174 in the arms of a cluciform distributer 170 to inlet passages 176 in plugs 44 sealing the top ends of unused control rod guide tubes 40 in each fuel element assembly. Slots 182 in the plugs enable the coolant to enter the tubes 40 which have variously oriented apertures 183 at different positions along their lengths for spraying the coolant over the fuel elements.
