Abstract
1404170 Hydrodesulphurizing and deasphalting oils UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 13 Dec 1972 [14 Dec 1971] 57420/72 Heading C5E An asphaltic charge 1 is catalytically hydrogenated at 4 to convert sulphurous compounds into hydrogen sulphide and the effluent 5 is separated at 6 at substantially the same pressure to provide a vaporous phase 12 and a normally liquid phase 7. The liquid stream 7 is either solvent deasphalted, e.g. using a mixture of n-butane and isobutane, at 10 or first subjected to vacuum distillation at 8 to remove a gas oil 13. The solvent deasphalting provides an asphaltene concentrate 11 and a deasphalted oil 14. At least a portion of each of the streams 12 and 14 are catalytically reacted with hydrogen at 15 to convert sulphurous compounds into hydrogen sulphide. The effluent from 15 is separated at 17 at substantially the same pressure and at 60‹ to 140‹ F. to provide a fuel oil product 18 containing less than 1 wt. per cent sulphur. The charge stock treated is suitably a crude oil, an atmospheric or vacuum residue, heavy cycle stock or tar sand oil. The hydrodesulphurization in both zones 4 and 15 is carried out at 500-3500 psig and at a maximum catalyst bed temperature of 600-900‹ F. using a catalyst, e.g. comprising nickel and molybdenum on alumina.
