Abstract

1403797 Polyamide/polyolefin blends IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 Nov 1973 [27 Nov 1972] 54676/72 Headings C3P and C3R Compositions comprise (a) at least one polyamide, (b) at least one olefin polymer, (c) at least one graft copolymer obtained by grafting an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride on to an olefin polymer, and (d) at least one compound selected from aromatic carboxylic acids, monocarboxylic acids containing at least one -OH group and capable of forming ring anhydrides, polycarboxylic acids containing not more than 4 carboxyl groups and not more than 1 atom of an element other than C, H and O, and anhydrides of such acids, wherein 10 to 90% of the CO functions contained in the acid and/or anhydride groups of (c) and (d) are present in the acid and/or anhydride groups of (c), and the quantities of (c) and (d) present in the compositions is sufficient to provide a total amount of CO funcions in the acid and/or anhydride groups equivalent to those provided by 0À01 to 1À0 weight per cent of maleic anhydride in the composition, (a) and (b) are each present in an amount of at least 1 weight per cent, and when (d) is an acid it is present in an amount of not more than the acid equivalent of 0À5 weight per cent of maleic acid based on the polyamide content of the composition. Specified polyamides are polyhexamethylene adipamide, sebacamide, isophthalamide and terephthalamide; polycaprolactam, polydodecanolactam, polymetaxylylene adipamide and copolymers thereof. The polyolefin may be a polymer of ethylene, propylene, butene-1 or 4-methyl pentene-1 or a copolymer thereof with minor proportions of other olefins. The graft copolymer may be obtained by grafting maleic acid, itaconic acid or maleic anhydride on to an olefin polymer, preferably of similar type to that used for component (b). The compositions may also contain stabilizers, pigments, flame retardants and fillers, e.g. glass and carbon fibres and asbestos; and may be made into threads, fibres, sheets, films and moulded articles which may be dyed. Many suitable acids and anhydrides are specified and examples describe compositions comprising (a) polyhexamethylene adipamide, (b) polypropylene, (c) graft copolymer of maleic anhydride on polypropylene and (d) maleic anhydride.
