Abstract

1403774 Bonded yarns and ropes E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 8 Aug 1972 [9 Aug 1971] 37003/72 Headings D1T and D1W The filaments of a thread, yarn, string cord or rope are bonded together by a thermoplastic copolyester elastomer derived from a dicarboxylic acid having a molecular weight of less than 350, a diol having a molecular weight of less than 250 and a diol (glycol) or polyglycol of molecular weight 350 to 6000, the short chain ester units comprising 15 to 65% by weight of the copolymer and the long chain ester units 35 to 85%. The copolymer having a melt index of less than 150 and a melting point of at least 125‹C. The filaments may be polyester, nylon or cotton. The dicarboxylic acid may be used as its ester, anhydride or acid chloride. Many aromatic, aliphatic and cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acids are specified. Aromatic acids of 8 to 16 carbon atoms, particularly phthalic, terephthalic and isophthalic acid and mixtures thereof are preferred. Some p(#-hydroxyethoxy) benzoic acid may also be copolymerised. Specified low molecular weight diols include those with 2 to 15 carbon atoms and especially the aliphatic diols with 2 to 8 carbon atoms. Diol diesters, ethylene oxide and ethylene carbonate are also suitable. The higher (350-6000) molecular weight diol is preferably a poly (alkylene ether) glycol in which the alkylene group is of 2 to 9 carbon atoms. The diol may itself contain ester linkages. Thus a dicarboxymethyl acid of polybutylene glycol may be added to the polymerisation mixture where it is esterified with the low molecular weight diol. Polyester glycols, especially of sterically hindered polyesters, e.g. poly (2, 2-dimethyl-1, 3-propylene adipate) may also be used. Polyformals from pentamethylene glycol and formaldehyde, polythioether glycols, polybutadiene and polyisoprene glycols, their hydrogenation products and glycol esters of dicarboxylic acids formed by oxidation of polyisobutylene-diene copolymers may also be used. Preparation is by ester interchange e.g. dimethylterephalate is heated with a long chain glycol and an excess of short chain diol in at 150‹ to 260‹ and the methanol distilled. Organic and inorganic titanate catalysts are listed, as are phenol stabilisers, phthalate ester plasticisers and pigments, dyes, optical brighteners and flame retardants. The binder is applied to the thread &c in an organic solvent or an aqueous dispersion. Pick-up is 1 to 10% by weight.
