Abstract
1403446 Magnetic workholder CINCINNATI MILACRON-HEALD CORP 27 Oct 1972 [8 Nov 1971] 49747/72 Heading H1P A magnetic workholder 10 for use with a grinding machine generating a surface of revolution of a workpiece 11, e.g. the inner race of an anti-friction heating has a rotatable spindle 14 at one end of which is mounted a non-rotating surrounding annular coil 13. A first ring 14 on the spindle receives a n electromagnetic field of one polarity, e.g. N and second ring 15 concentric with the first receives a field of opposed polarity, e.g. S. An axial lip 16 extends in a plane axially spaced from that of the rings 14, 15 and is split into 4 parts 17, 18, 19, 21 each subtending 90 degrees with connectors 22, 23 joining ring 14 to diametrically opposed parts 18, 21 and connectors 24, 25 joining ring 15 to the remaining parts 17, 19. Wear resisting inserts 26, 27, 28, 29 are provided flush with the radial surfaces of the lip to engage the end surface of workpiece 11 and are gapped from the next adjacent part of the lip by slots. Rings 14, 15; the lip segments 17, 18, 19, 21 and connectors 22, 23, 24, 25 are of magnetic material and the spaces between the connectors and the rings are filled with non-magnetic epoxy resin A. The connectors are bounded by axial planes at 90 degrees extending radially from the ring and lip axis and coned surfaces about an axial vertex and connectors 22, 23 and parts 18, 21 are magnetically insulated from connectors 24, 25 and parts 17, 19. The coil is energized and magnetic flux passes into, circumferentially around, and out of the workpiece through parts 21, 18 and 17, 19 and the associated connectors to retain the workpiece without slipping.
