Abstract

1403408 Colour reversal development MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 11 Oct 1972 [12 Oct 1971 14 Aug 1972] 46979/72 Heading G2C Colour reversal development of an exposed gelatine/silver halide emulsion layer comprises impregnating with a monobath comprising colour developer, black and white developer and an agent which inhibits colour formation, chemically or light fogging the unexposed silver halide, deactivating or removing the inhibitor, and allowing colour coupling (followed by bleaching and fixing). The colour developer (which maybe a primary aromatic amine) has a polarographic half-wave potential at pH 11 of -159 to -305 mv. Its concentration is at least 0.02 mole/l. The proportion of colour developer to total developer may be 40- 95 mole per cent. The black and white developer (which may be of the hydroquinone, p-aminophenol or pyrazolidone series) has a polarographic half-wave potential at pH 10 of -10 to -187 mv. Its concentration may be 0.0045 mole/l or less. The mole ratio of inhibitor to colour developer is at least 0.97. The inhibitor (which may be a sulphite, ascorbic acid, citrazinic acid, 4-hydroxy-3- butanone or hydroquinone monocarboxylic acid hydrazide may have a concentration 0.10-0.48 mole/l. It may act by forming a stable reaction product with oxidized colour developer (at a pH of 8.5-14) or by forming a temporary reaction product with the colour developer itself (at a lowerpH at which no oxidation occurs). Its effect may be terminated by washing with water or an aqueous solution of pH 7-13. It may be effected at the same time as light fogging. The colour coupler may be in the monobath or initially in the emulsion layer.
