Abstract

1402912 Peat/soil blocks; planting seeds P PHILLIPS 19 July 1973 [20 April 1972] 18460/72 Headings AID and A1E A machine for making peat or soil blocks comprises guide rails I to support mould boxes 3, a filling station A and a moulding and pressing station B. A table 9 adjoins station B and is arranged to receive the boxes 3, which then have their contents removed by a pneumatic ram 26. The guide rails 1 each have a depending vertical flange 2 which coincides with an aperture 7 in the side wall 6 of the mould box 3. The box 3 is filled at A and then advanced to B by a pneumatic ram 8. A horizontal platform 10 at B has raised sidewalls 11 to block the apertures 7, and the platform 10 is moved vertically by a ram 12 to engage the moulding and cutting head 13. The blocks having been formed, the box 3 is advanced to the table 9 by ram 8, where seeds are introduced by means of a device comprising a container 30 removably mounted on a base plate 31 formed with a square matrix of holes. An assembly of tubes 33 is carried by a vertically movable support 34. The tubes fit into holes 32 and capture one seed each in a recess when moved up to meet. exit holes 37 at the top of container 30. The seeds are blown down flexible tubes. 39 into the blocks. Having been seeded the blocks are removed transversely from the box 3 by the ram 26 and pusher. All the rams may be operated automatically in a predetermined sequence.
