Abstract

1402800 Non-woven fabric, rendering fibres resilient CONWED CORP 24 Aug 1973 40132/73 Headings DIP and D1R A web of density not more than 61bs/cu ft comprises water absorbent fibres that have been made more resilient by treatment with a resin that does not react chemically with the fibres but which at least in part penetrates the fibres. The fibres may be cotton, wood (kraft, sulphite or raw wood), bagasse, jute, viscose, rayon or acetate rayon. The resin is formed by condensing excess formaldehyde with phenol, cresol, resorcinol or mixtures thereof in the presence of an alkaline catalyst. The resin has a molecular weight of 125 to 3000 and at least the major part is water soluble at infinite dilution and pH 6.5 to 7.5. After penetrating the hollow fibres the resin is cured by heating. Preferably the resin comprises 1.75 to 3% by wt. of fibres so that insufficient resin remains on the outside of the fibres to act as a binder. The web, preferably of density 1.5 to 6 lbs/cu ft may be garnetted or air laid. The fibres may be treated with the resin before forming the web, they may be sprayed with an aqueous dispersion of the resin as they are. air laid and the web then calendered and dried or the resin may be sprayed onto a garnetted web as it is crosslapped. If a bound web is required a styrene-butadiene or vinyl-acrylic self crosslinking elastomer is added to the resin dispersion.
