Abstract

1402634 Vehicle wheels BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 2 Feb 1973 [3 March 1972] 10101/72 Heading B7C [Also in Division F4] A wheel, preferably for use upon a railway track in a mineshaft, includes means for cooling the periphery of the wheel in the form of a plurality of closed chambers 5, 10 disposed equidistantly about the wheel, each chamber containing a vaporizable medium, e.g. water. Each chamber has 5% of the volume fitted with the vaporizable medium and is partially evacuated to less than atmospheric pressure. In operation, heat generated in the tyre 4, 12 causes the medium to vaporize; the vapour condensing in the metal hub region of the wheel. Scoops or cooling fins may be provided to aid the condensation process.
