Abstract

1402424 Sealing strips EVODE Ltd 8 Aug 1972 [12 Aug 1971] 37880/71 Heading B2E A sealing material comprises a sheet-like substrate having on at least one surface a coating of pressure sensitive thermoplastic adhesive which is at least as thick as a substrate, the adhesive mass comprising a thermoplastics synthetic base polymer, a compatible tackifying resin film. The substrate may be a metal sheet, such as of aluminium stainless steel, or a sheet of polypropylene, polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride. The substrate may be reinforced with a woven or non- woven fibrous material. A laminated substrate such as of paper and metal foil may also be used. The substrate may be pre-treated by flame treatment or corona discharge before application of the adhesive composition. The adhesive layer is preferably 10 to 100 times the thickness of the substrate. The actual thickness is normally 0.025 to 0.1 inches. The base polymer of the adhesive may be polybutene, polyisobutylene, styrene, polymers, such as styrene-butadiene copolymers, and polymers of alpha-methyl styrene, polyvinyl ethers, acrylic and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers. Suitable tackifying resins are rosins, rosin esters, hydrogenated rosin esters and hydrocarbon resins such as polyindenes, polyindenes, polyterpenes, coumarone-indene resins, and non-heat advancing phenolic resins. vinyl aromatic, pinene, acrylic acid, vinyl acetate, and ketone resins and copolymers of vinyl chloride, and maleic acid. Liquid tackifying resins such as low molecular weight polybutenes or polyisobutylenes, may also be used. Fire retardant properties may be imparted by the addition of a halogenated aromatic compound together with an antimony trioxide or alternatively by the use of phosphorous or nitrogen-containing fire retardant materials. Numerous organic fillers are listed which may be present in the mixtures and waxes and metal soaps may also be present.
