Abstract
1402194 Anion exchange resins and their preparation BAYER AG 7 March 1973 [8 March 1972] 11008/73 Heading C3P An anion exchange resin is produced by condensing a cross-linked insoluble organic polymer containing at least one aromatic nucleus, with at least one N-hydroxyalkylimide in the presence of at least one swelling agent and of at least one Friedel-Crafts catalyst, the water formed during the condensation being continuously removed from the reaction mixture, and the reaction product thus obtained being hydrolysed. The condensation is preferably carried out in the presence of a hydrogen halide or at least one compound capable of producing a hydrogen halide. The catalyst is preferably also a Lewis acid or a compound which can be converted into its halide by a hydrogen halide. Examples of the latter are Fe 2 O 3 , ZnO and ZnCO 3 . The N-hydroxy-alkylimide is preferably formed in situ from the corresponding unsubstituted imide. In the examples styrene/divinyl benzene copolymers, a p-vinyl toluene/divinyl benzene copolymer and a styrene/trivinyl benzene copolymer, are condensed with N- hydroxymethyl phthalimie using various Friedel Crafts catalysts.
