Abstract

1402163 Digital frequency meter FLAN MICROWAVE INSTRUMENTS Ltd and K I KHOURY 10 Jan 1974 [10 Oct 1972] 46700/72 Heading H3H Apparatus for automatically measuring the frequency of a signal 15 lying above the upper limit of direct frequency counters comprises means 10, 11, 12 for generating a succession of six reference frequencies F 1 - #F, F 1 , F 1 + #F, F 2 - #F, F 2 and F 2 + #F, means 13 for introducing a number of consecutive harmonics simultaneously with each reference frequency, means 14 for mixing the signal 15 with the reference signals and their harmonics, a low pass filter 16 having a cut-off frequency less than half the frequency of the lowest frequency reference signal (to avoid ambiquity where the frequency of signal 15 is approximately midway between adjacent harmonics) and computing and control means for determining from the resultant beat frequencies, the frequency of the signal 15. Preferably #F = #F. F 1 , F 2 and #F are selected to provide a continuous measurement range extending over a number of the harmonics. The computing works on the basis of determining the number of the harmonic of a selected one of the reference signals which is nearest to the signal 15, the value of the corresponding beat frequency and the sign of the difference between the frequency of signal 15 and said nearest harmonic. If the frequency of signal 15 is out of range this is indicated at 25. The range may extend up 19À999 GHz the most significant bit being represented by overspill.
