Abstract
1402067 Coated copper wire HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO 26 Oct 1973 [30 Oct 1972] 50014/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] Copper is coated with copper borate glass by heating the copper to approximately red heat in a quartz chamber in which there is a vapour phase consisting essentially of steam, entrained Na borate and oxygen, the O 2 content being sufficient to convert the copper surface to Cu 2 O and insufficient to convert the copper to CuO, and passing the copper into a saturated borax solution while the copper is at least at approximately red heat. The preferred temperature of heating is 850-900 C. and suitable apparatus for coating wire or tape with a flexible insulating coating of copper borate is described.
