Abstract

1401842 Surgical sutures having biocidal properties SUTURES INC 22 June 1972 [12 April 1972] 29340/72 Heading A5E A surgical suture having long-lasting biocidal properties comprises a suture strand having incorporated substantially uniformly therein throughout its length a substantially waterinsoluble salt of a basic antibiotic and an acid antibiotic other than cephalosporin. The method of manufacture of the suture comprises contacting a suture strand with a solution capable of swelling the suture consisting of a solvent and the said water-insoluble salt, so swelling the suture and impregnating the suture with the solvent and the said water-insoluble salt. The solvent is then removed from the suture leaving the water-insoluble salt distributed substantially uniformly throughout the suture strand. The basic antibiotic may be a polypeptide, i.e. bactracin, polymycin, tyrothricin, or vancomycin; a sugar, i.e. neomycin, erythromycin, streptomycin, vancomycin, or nystatin; or a base, i.e. cycloserine, tetracycline, aureomycin, terramycin, gentamicin, or polymixin B. The acid antibiotic is of a penicillin or fumagillin.
