Abstract

1401766 Continuous casting ALCAN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 13 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 58876/71 Heading B3F [Also in Division F4] A number of continuous casting moulds (such as 1 with a flow control float 4 initially supported by wires 5) are fed simultaneously with molten Al or Al alloy through individual dip tubes 3 with inlets 6 in a trough 2, e.g. supplied by way of a launder 12, and, to prevent flow through a dip tube until a sufficient local level in the trough has been attained, each tube is fitted with a buoyant plug 16 of a material substantially unaffected by molten Al and with a lower specific gravity and having a head greater in width than the dip tube mouth and a stem of a diameter slightly less than that of the tube 3, the head being of such size as to provide sufficient buoyancy for the whole plug.
