Abstract
1400686 Preparation of acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile copolymers LUBRIZOL CORP 14 March 1973 [21 March 1972] 12234/73 Heading C3P The aqueous acidic copolymerization of at least one of acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile with at least one other unsaturated monomer, at least a portion of which is an acrylamido alkane sulphonic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof, is carried out in the presence of less than 10 wt. per cent (based on the monomers in the system) of at least one salt which is a nitrate, chloride, sulphate, or alpha polychlorocarboxylate of ammonium or of a metal of Group 1b, 2, 3a, 4a, 7b and 8 of the Periodic Table (Handbook of Chemistry and Physics 45th Edn.), said metal having an atomic number greater than 12. Examples of the sulphonic monomer are 2-acrylamidopropane sulphonic acid or 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulphonic acid or the sodium salts thereof. Preferred metallic salts are the nitrates, chlorides or sulphates of Al, Zn, Cu, Ni, and Co. Other metals are Ca, Sr, Ba, Cd, Hg, Pb, Mn, and Fe. In the example the acidifying agent is H 2 SO 4 and the initiator is a mixture of potassium persulphate and sodium metabisulphite. The polymers are fibre forming.
