Abstract
1400293 Electro-optical measuring apparatus OPTOGRAMS Inc 21 June 1972 [28 Feb 1972] 29147/72 Heading G1A Measuring apparatus comprises a fixed and a movable jaw biased together by a constant tension spring and an encoder carrying equally spaced lines and connected to the movable jaw so that it interrupts a light beam when the movable jaw is moved and produces pulses, in number proportional to the displacement. The device may be in the form of a micrometer as shown or may be a height gauge or a probe type depth micrometer. The encoder may be linear or rotary, transparent or opaque and the lines may interrupt a through beam or reflect the light beam. The method of operation is said to be to move the jaws apart, place the object between them and then allow them to return to contact the object. A counter records the number of pulses in each movement and is said to be able to detect the direction of movement and hence to give a reading proportional to the size of the object. As shown, Fig.2, the moving jaw 38 slides on rods 46, 47 and is biased towards fixed jaw 36 by constant tension spring 55. The encoder 72 is attached to the upper part of movable jaw 38 and moves linearly to interrupt a light beam from the source mounted in block 64. In a second embodiment, Fig.14, a nut 230 mounted on movable jaw 38 rotates a lead screw 222 and drives a rotary disc 135 with radial lines past a light source and receiver 68. In a third embodiment, Fig.9, the encoders are driven by a tape passing round precision rollers. The ends of tape 147 are both clamped at 145, 146 in the upper parts of the movable jaw 38 and the tape passes round precision rollers 150, 152 and guide rollers 148, 149, 154. Both precision rollers 150, 152 carry encoders 135a, 135b respectively and the light beam 66 passes through the overlapping part of the encoders. Many variations of this tape and roller system are described. For example, a single encoder, mounted on precision roller 154 may be used or the tape may stretch from movable jaw 38, round the encoding roller and then to another mounting kept taut by a constant tension spring.
