Abstract

1400268 A method and apparatus for making tufts of hairs or bristles LION BRUSH WORKS Ltd 19 Oct 1972 [20 Oct 1971 5 May 1972] 48164/72 Heading A4K Tufts of hairs or bristles for use in brushes are produced by forming a bundle of hairs or bristles 1 in a holder 4 carried by a support 6, ultrasonically vibrating the holder 4 by placing the support in contact with ultrasonic transmitters or sonotrodes 9 whilst lowering a perforated plate 3 on to the bundle of hairs or bristles such that the hairs or bristles are guided into the holes in the plate to form a plurality of spatially arranged tufts. The perforated plate with the tufts inserted therein is removed from the holder, inverted and placed on a carrier plate (20) Fig.3 (not shown) in contact with ultrasonic transmitters or sonotrodes and provided with pins (21) corresponding to the holes in the perforated plate, each pin having a shape corresponding to that of the desired contour of the tufts so that the tufts are vibrated to the desired contour. The lower part of the perforated plate together with the lower ends of the tufts are then placed in a liquid resin binder and the binder allowed to set. The tufts are then removed from the perforated plate by placing the perforated plate over an ejector plate (36) Fig.7 (not shown), carrying pins (37) which correspond with the holes in the perforated plate. If the tufts are for use in brushes in which paint can be fed to the tufts through a hollow handle, each tuft is formed, with a central feed channel by inserting a sharp pin or needle (48), Fig.6 (not shown), into each tuft before or during the application of the liquid resin binder.
