Abstract

1400252 Screening apparatus GEORGE WHITTAKER & SONS (KNUTSFORD) Ltd 3 May 1973 [9 March 1972] 10924/72 Heading B2H An apparatus for cleaning potatoes by separation of soil therefrom comprises a floor over and in contact with which the potatoes are advanced to effect dislodgment of soil therefrom, the floor including a plurality of axially rotatably mounted helical coil springs disposed in parallel side-by-side relationship, the axes of the springs being perpendicular to the direction of intended potato advancement and being at different heights so that the floor is inclined in the direction of said advancement and each spring being of the same hand along its entire length. As shown, the floor is made up of spaced rollers 5, Fig. 1, mounted in a container 4. Each roller comprises a metal shaft 6, Fig. 2, around which is mounted a metal helical coil spring 9. A rubber bush 10 supports the middle portion of the spring. Toothed wheels 7 on the ends of the shafts are connected to each other and to an electric drive motor. Potatoes fed on to the floor are advanced towards the left by rotation of the springs 9, soil separated from the potatoes fall between and through the springs 9 on to a conveyor 11. Cleaned potatoes from the rollers 5 pass over a grading arrangement 2 comprising side-by-side parallel shafts 12 rotatably driven through toothed wheels 13 by an electric motor and carrying spaced hard rubber rings 14, the rings on one shaft being staggered relative to the rings on adjacent shafts. Potatoes smaller than a predetermined size fall between the rings 14 on to a conveyor 17. Larger potatoes are advanced towards a table 3.
