Abstract
1399938 Treating drilling fluid EXXON PRODUCTION RESEARCH CO 24 Aug 1972 [20 Dec 1971] 39392/72 Headings B2H and B2P In a method for removing drilled solids from a drilling fluid being circulated in a well and containing drilled solids and a particulate weighting material, denser and finer than at least a portion of the drilled solids, the drilling fluid is screened with a first vibrating screen having a mesh size of 10-100 mesh (U.S. standard) to remove a portion of the drilled solids contained in the drilling fluid and to pass the weighting material; the drilling fluid passing the first vibrating screen is centrifugally separated into a low-density effluent and into a high-density underflow slurry containing drilled solids and weighting material; the effluent is returned to the drilling fluid being circulated in the well; the underflow slurry is screened with a second vibrating screen having a mesh size of 100-325 mesh (U.S. standard) to remove additional drilled solids from the underflow slurry and to pass most of the weighting material; and material passing the second vibrating screen is returned to the drilling fluid being circulated in the well. Drilling fluid withdrawn from the well and containing reactive clasp such as bentonite, a weighting material such as barite, and drilled solids is passed through a first vibrating screen 15 and then is pumped by a pump 36 through hydrocyclones 11 connected in parallel. The low density effluent containing practically all the bentonite and substantial quantities of barite is discharged through the vortex finders of the hydrocyclones is returned to the fluid system tank 20 through a header 18 and a conduit 19. The underflow slurry consisting principally of barite and drilled solids is collected in a trough 23 and gravitates into a second vibrating screen 12 which, as shown, may be of the gyratory type being vibrated by out-of-balance weights 29, 30 driven by a motor 28 and being mounted on springs 26. The screen may contain a wash assembly 37 which may be supplied with a wash liquid or with drilling fluid. The small size particles and most of the liquid pass. the screen mesh 27 on to a domed deck 35 and thence to a discharge 33 into the tank 20. Materials collected on the screen 27, mainly the drilled solids, are vibrated in a radial and circular direction towards the outer periphery of the screen mesh 27 where they are discharged via an opening 31 into a waste trough 34.
