Abstract
1399595 N,N<SP>1</SP> - bis - (p - cyanophenyl) - 4,4<SP>1</SP>- bipyridylium salts IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 May 1972 [2 June 1971] 18535/71 Heading C2C N,N<SP>1</SP> - bis - (p - cyanophenyl) - 4,4<SP>1</SP> - bipyridylium salts are prepared by reacting an N,N<SP>1</SP>- bis - (2,4 - dinitrophenyl) - 4,4<SP>1</SP> - bipyridylium salt with p-cyanoaniline in a polar medium. The salts may be halides or alkyl sulphates and the medium may be aqueous or non-aqueous such as ethanol. The components are refluxed and the product recrystallized from ethanol. N,N<SP>1</SP> - bis - (2,4 - dinitrophenyl) - 4,41 - bipyridylium dichloride is prepared by reacting 4,4<SP>1</SP>- bipyridyl with 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene in methanol.
