Abstract
1399515 Purifying waste liquid DEGREMONT SOC GENERALE D'EPURATION ET D'ASSAINISSEMENT 17 Nov 1972 [18 Nov 1971] 53194/72 Heading C1C A process for purifying waste liquid comprises treating it with flocculant (e.g. Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , FeCl 3 ) in vessel 11, separating the flocculated material in settler 17, passing the clarified liquid through at least one immersed biological filter bed 22, periodically backwashing the bed, e.g. with purified liquid from vessel (35a, and conveying the backwash water to vessel 35 upstream of vessel 11, the bed 22 comprising a material which on backwashing retains bacteria on certain parts of its surface and loses bacteria from its smooth surface parts. The bed 22 is aerated by air, oxygen-enriched air or oxygen entering through pipe 23 and diffuser 19. The liquid after passing through bed 22 may be further purified by passing it through a refining bed (e.g. of sand) which may be positioned below bed 22 or an activated carbon adsorption bed (e.g. for removing tannings). The filter material 22 may be a clay which has been burned with dextrin.
