Abstract
139,920. Gardiner, W. C. April 11, 1919. Mariners' compasses.-The compass-bowl pivot member is so mounted as to be resilient both axially and laterally. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the mounting comprises an open helical spring 1 suporting the cup 3 and secured at 5 to the bowl 2; this spring is surrounded by a closed helical spring 4 also secured to the member 5 and having a bush 6 through which the spring 1 passes. Attached to the cup 3 is a mass 7 so arranged that the centre of gravity of the mass and cup is approximately at the point of the pivot 8. A light framework 9, which may be secured to the bowl by springs 10, is also secured to the cup 3; this framework may carry a light annular cylinder 14, and its side-members may be used as lubber-lines. The springs and the mass 7 are so adjusted that vibration does not produce relative movements of the two pivot members. The springs 1, 4 may be replaced by a single cylindrical or conical helix.
