1399106 U.V. stabilized varnishes; lubricant compositions; oils and fats; fuel compositions BUCKMAN LABORATORIES Inc 3 Aug 1972 36329/72 Headings C4A C5C C5F and C5G [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] Organic material subject to degradation by ultra-violet light contains as stabilizer a phosphonate ester of the formula wherein R is an alkyl or haloalkyl group having 1 to 18 carbon atoms, R<SP>1</SP> is a mono-, di- or trivalent saturated C 1 -C 18 aliphatic hydrocarbyl radical which may be halo-substituted, or a mono-, di- or tri-valent metal, e.g. an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, Zn, Cd, Sn, Al or Ni, n is an integer from 1 to 3 corresponding to the valency of R<SP>1</SP>, and X is H, Br, or a group of the formula where R is as defined above. Specified materials include lubricating oils of the aliphatic ester type, animal and vegetable oils and fats, hydrocarbons, e.g. gasoline, diesel oil, mineral oils, fuel oil, cutting fluids and industrial coatings. In Example 33 the phosphonate esters are added to a tung oil varnish coating composition which is then applied to wood surfaces.
