Abstract

1399095 Pigmenting and tack-spinning; pile fabrics IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 June 1972 [21 June 1971 9 Aug 1971] 28958/71 and 37294/71 Headings D1B and D1K A pile-surfaced product in which the pile is formed by a tack-spinning process is pigmented by applying pigment to a component of the laminate to be subjected to tack spinning before the pile is formed. The pigment may be applied to a web component of the laminate in such a way that it is carried into the pile during pile formation and/or it may be applied to the polymeric component of the laminate which subsequently comprises the pile. The pigment may be distributed evenly or its distribution may be discontinuous. When it is the web that is pigmented the pigment may be applied to the web immediately before the web contacts the polymeric material, and this may be effected on the same apparatus as that in which pile formation occurs just before the pile forming step. The pigment applied to the web may 'be soluble in the polymeric material, or any component, including solvent, of the polymer composition, employed in pile formation. Where the pigment is insoluble in the polymer component and is carried into the fibres from the web by flow currents in a mechanical fashion the only requirement is that the pigment should be particulate so that it may be so carried and that it be sufficiently loosely adhered to the web that it may be dislodged from it and carried into the pile under the pile driving conditions employed. It may be desirable to apply pigment to the web in the presence of a bonding agent which may enhance its adhesion to the web but which, under the pile driving conditions employed, releases the pigment into the polymeric pile-forming material. A preferred method of applying pigment to the laminate is by a transfer printing process, optionally while the polymeric material is in contact with the temporary anchorage surface used to form the pile in the tack-spinning process. Dyestuffs particularly suitable for this application are volatilisable disperse dyes. In examples polyethylene pile is coloured with 2-hydroxy-5- methyl-4'-acetylaminoazobenzene; 1, 4-diamino-2-methoxy-anthraquinone; 1-hydroxy-4-(ptoluidino)-anthraquinone; carbon black; and other unspecified colourants. Five figures illustrate in diagrammatic sectional elevation different types of apparatus suitable for effecting the process using disperse dyes. British Specifications 1334672; 1378638; 1378639 and 1378640 are referred to.
