Abstract

1398238 Laminates ARCHIBALD EDMESTON & SONS Ltd 1 Sept 1972 [2 June 1971] 18556/71 Heading B5N In a method for coating a web reinforcement with synthetic plastics material a first polymer layer is continuously laid on an endless first release surface, a web reinforcement is continuously applied to and bonded to the first layer on the release surface, a second polymer layer is formed on a second release surface, the web reinforcement with the first layer bonded thereto is continuously stripped from the first release surface and fed to the second layer on the second release surface to apply the second layer to the first layer, and the web reinforcement with the first and second layers bonded thereto is stripped from the second release surface. In Fig. 1 a first polymer layer is applied to heated metal cylinder 10 coated with silicone rubber using coating knife 14 and is bonded to fabric 16, e.g. a tricot fabric, fed from roll 18. The fabric having the first polymer layer bonded thereto is stripped from cylinder 10 by roller 22 and guided by rollers 24 and 26 to a second heated metal cylinder 12 coated with silicone rubber on which is formed a layer of printed material by means of printer 48 and a second polymer layer by means of coating knife 30. The fabric having the two polymer layers bonded thereto is stripped from cylinder 12 by roller 32 and fed through oven 34 on tenter conveyer 40 for completion of solvent evaporation and curing, cooled over rollers 36 and taken up on roller 38. Exhaust hoods 44 and 46 are provided to remove solvent fumes and rollers 28 and 50 are provided to remove any plastics material still adhering to the release surface. The first polymer layer may comprise a two-component polymer, e.g. a mixture of a prepolymer with an isocyanate which react to form a cross-linked polyurethane, in a low-boiling solvent, e g. ethyl acetate, and the second polymer layer may comprise a one-component polymer, e.g. a cured polyurethane, in a high boiling solvent, e.g. a mixture of dimethyl formamide and methyl ethyl ketone.
