Abstract

1397977 Photographic developing apparatus AMERICAN HOECHST CORP 27 July 1972 [27 July 1971] 35274/72 Heading G2Z In an apparatus and process for treating an exposed photo-sensitive planographic printing plate at least one pad 14, 16, of a soft material reciprocates across the moving plate 42, so as to spread a liquid developer which has been applied to the plate. As shown each pad 14, 16 is curved and is connected to respective reciprocating shafts 18, 20 and guides 22, 24. Developer sprays 10 are directed between the curved surface of each pad and the plate 42. The pads reciprocate across the plate 42 at 180 degrees out of phase to each other. Each pad preferably makes 300-400 reciprocations per minute over a distance of 1-3 inches, the length of contact of each pad with the plate is between 2-3 inches and each pad exerts a pressure of between 0.08 psi and 0.3 psi. The soft material of each pad, which does not damage the surface of the plate 42, may be velvet coated rubber. The plate 42 may have been exposed on both sides or may be two singly exposed plates placed with their non- exposed surfaces in contact.
