Abstract

1397392 Dimeric alcohol products CONTINENTAL OIL CO 1 Feb 1974 [11 April 1973] 04809/74 Heading C2C Dimeric alcohol products are prepared by condensing at least one primary alkanol having a methylene group adjacent the hydroxylated carbon atom in the liquid phase in the presence of an alkali catalyst and an organic zinc compound, the catalyst being an alkali metal alcoholate or a precursor thereof which forms an alcoholate in the reaction system and the organic zinc compound being one or more of (R<SP>1</SP>-CO-O) 2 Zn, (R<SP>11</SP>-CO-CH=CR<SP>11</SP>-O) 2 Zn or (R<SP>111</SP>-SO 3 ) 2 Zn where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>11</SP>, and R<SP>111</SP> are each, independently, saturated or unsaturated, cyclic a acyclic, branch or straight chain hydrocarbon groups, while simultaneously removing water as it forms. The reaction product may be hydrogenated.
