Abstract

1397192 Fluid operated starters INGERSOLL-RAND CO 20 Feb 1973 [20 March 1972] 8244/73 Heading F1K A fluid operated starter 1 includes a casing 2 containing a fluid-operated motor driving a shaft 7, a starter engaging member 18 slidable axially and rotatably mounted in the casing a piston 34 located in a first fluid chamber 33 in the casing and connected to the starter engaging member to move with it in engaging and disengaging directions, means for applying a large fluid force to the piston to cause it to move the starter engaging member in an engaging direction means 15 inter-connecting the starter engaging member and motor shaft for driving the starter engaging member and operative in response to the driving rotation of the motor to cause the starter engaging member to remain in engagement with an engine engaging member and means for reducing the large fluid force applied to the piston to a smaller fluid force after the starter engaging member is engaged and the starter motor is operating whereby the starter engaging member can be disengaged by the engine driving the starter motor after the engine starts. As shown the starter engaging member is the pinion member 18 but the starter may comprise a pair of axially engaging jaws or splines, as described the starter is air operated. The description refers to starters of internal combustion engines and turbines.
