Abstract

1396292 Thermal storage heaters; heat pumps; water heaters; space heating devices J E RANDELL 10 May 1972 [10 Feb 1971 28 April 1971] 4334/71 and 11772/71 Headings F4U F4H F4A and F4V A heat storage unit comprises at least one container at least partially filled with a crystallizable hydrate of trisodium (ortho) phosphate, other than the monohydrate, preferably the dodecahydrate. The or each container may also contain water and/or one or more other crystallizable salts hydrates such as sodium sulphate decahydrate, disodium hydrogen orthophosphate dodecahydrate, sodium carbonate decahydrate or sodium chromate decahydrate. Each container may additionally contain a magnesium containing compound. Each container may be heated either internally or externally and either be open to the atmosphere or have a pressure safety valve. Means are provided for permanently maintaining at least some of the salt hydrate in each container in crystalline form, either by thermally insulating a pocket of salt hydrate from the associated heating element or by connecting a pocket of salt hydrate by a heat bridge to ambient temperature. The heat storage unit may form part of a central heating system (Figs. 1-5, 13-16), a room air conditioning and ventilating system (Fig. 6), thermal storage radiators (Figs. 7-12), hot water storage heaters (Figs. 17-21), or of a refrigeration and heat pump units (Figs. 22-32).
