Abstract
1395948 Transmitting mechanical power KAWASAKI JUKOGYO KK 25 July 1972 [29 July 1971 2 Nov 1971] 34789/72 Heading H2H A synchronous machine comprises an electromagnetic coupling 3 including a rotor 4 driven by a prime mover 1 and a rotor 5 for driving a load 2, a speed control device 11 for varying the speed of the prime mover, and a circuit 26, 33 for supplying current to the field winding (22), Fig. 1 (not shown), of an electric motor 8, the energization of the field winding and the operation of the speed control device to reduce the speed of the prime mover occurring within a period of three seconds to obtain synchronism of the rotors. The coupling 3 is similar to that described in Specification 1,303,117 but includes a damping winding (not shown) which enables asynchronous rotation of the rotors prior to the energization of the field winding. The rotor 4 is provided with a field winding (24) and slip rings 6 connected to a D.C. source via a switching device 10, and the rotor 5 has an armature winding (25) and slip rings 7 connected with an armature winding (23) of the motor 8 via a phase interchanging switch 9 which enables the rotors to rotate in the same or opposite directions. To synchronize the rotors, a source of A.C. or D.C. is supplied to the field winding (22) via the device 26 which may comprise controlled rectifiers. The speed control device 11 may control the supply of steam, fuel or current to the prime mover 1 depending on whether the prime mover is a steam turbine, an internal combustion engine or an electric motor. The device 11 is controlled simultaneously with the device 26 to synchronize the rotors.
