Abstract
1395869 Cutting by fusion HOESCH WERKE AG 19 April 1973 [24 April 1972] 18902/73 Heading B3V [Also in Division F2] A method of making a bearing cage or a part therefor comprises thermally cutting the cage or part from sheet material 1 (Fig. 3), the size and shape of the cage windows being controlled by the photo-electric reading of a pattern, and moving the pattern relative to a scale indicating the positions of the cage windows. In one embodiment, arcuate sections 3 (Fig. 3) of a cage for an axial thrust bearing are made with the guide device shown in Fig. 8. The device consists of an arm 4 mounted on a pivot 41, and having an adjustable effective length. The free end 42 of the arm is arranged to support a replaceable basic pattern 5. A black and white marking serves as a cutting pattern 51 for the photo-electric control arrangements. A plate 7 located below the arm is provided with graduation markings 72 indicating the positions of the centre lines of the cage windows. The plate 6 may be used for producing a complete cage for an axial thrust bearing. In a further embodiment, straight cage sections, which will be bent to form a cage for a radial bearing, are made with the device shown in Fig. 9. This device comprises a slide member 101 mounted for rectilinear motion along a guide rail 10, and carrying the basic pattern 5. Below the slide member, is a plate bearing a graduated scale 104 representing the positions of the centre lines of the cage windows. Before the cutting process, the upper side of the plate 1 is sand blasted. After cutting, the segments are bent into the required shape by bending in the cold, and slide pieces of steel, brass, or plastics may be attached to the cages or segments by welding, riveting, screwing, or by means of adhesive, or with plastics slide pieces by clamping. Finally, the cages or cage segments are sand blasted on all sides.
