Abstract

1395720 Counting apparatus W & T AVERY Ltd 25 Sept 1972 [25 Sept 1971] 44802/71 Headings G4D and G4A Counting apparatus is arranged to form the value f 1 f 4 /f 2 f 3 from four input frequencies f 1 -f 4 . A counter 10 is first arranged to count up pulses at frequency f 1 for a set number of periods of the frequency f 2 . The counter 10 is then arranged to count back to zero with pulses at frequency f 3 and during the time that it is so counting a further counter 14 receives pulses at a frequency f 4 . By arranging that two of the frequencies are fixed and the other two are equal and dependent upon the output of a transducer, the output of a transducer operating to a square law can be rendered linear. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) a first frequency f a is counted for a period of f 2 and then a second frequency f b is counted for the same period (so that f 1 = f a + f b ); the gate G4 receives the difference between the first and second frequencies (so that f 4 = f a -f b ); and f 2 , f 3 are constant. By this arrangement the count accumulated in the counter 14 will be proportional to f a <SP>2</SP> + f b <SP>2</SP>- In a further arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown) using two counters 10 the function (f a <SP>2</SP> + f b <SP>2</SP>)<SP>-1</SP> is formed.
