Abstract

1395707 Superconducting devices BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 23 May 1972 [25 May 1971] 16956/71 Heading F4U A superconducting device, in the form of a magnet having a winding 2 around a core 1 with radiation shields 4 and 5 located within a cryogenic casing 6, is in thermal contact with a refrigerating system 9 through a heat pipe 10. Also within the casing 6 are tubes 7 and 8 for receiving liquid helium. The working fluid in the heat pipe has a triple point above 4À5‹ K. and below the working temperature of the refrigerating system 9, e.g. liquid nitrogen, liquid argon, liquid neon or liquid hydrogen. In operation of the device, liquid helium is introduced into the bath between 7, 8, solidifying the working fluid in the heat pipe which then acts as a thermal barrier. When the superconducting device is not being used, no liquid helium is present in the bath 7, 8. A refrigerator 9 through the heat pipe, cools the tube 8, preventing the temperature of the device from rising too high in readiness for the next superconducting cycle. Instead of the refrigerator 9, a bath of liquid refrigerant, preferably the same liquid refrigerant as used in the heat pipe 10, may be disposed either adjacent the device or surrounding the casing 6.
