Abstract
1395589 Weeping dolls IDEAL TOY CORP 25 Oct 1972 [22 Dec 1971] 49187/72 Heading A6S [Also in Division F1] A doll which weeps when placed in a generally horizontal position has a flexible reservoir 47 for water introduced through its mouth 30 and a weight 70 which compresses the reservoir to force the water out through the corners of its eyes when the doll is laid upon its back. In the vertical position shown, a simulated feeding bottle 52 'has had the tip 55 of its nipple introduced through the doll's mouth to push back a valve 34 against the bias of its spring 36, closing a valve port 42 and allowing water to flow through a chamber 20a to fill the flexible reservoir 47. When the feeding bottle 52 is withdrawn, the spring 36 closes the valve 34 against a seat 32 to prevent water running out of the doll's mouth. At the same time, the valve 34 opens the port 42. If the doll is now laid flat on its back, Fig 3 (not shown), the weight 70 squeezes the flexible reservoir 47 and forces water through the open port 42 to a chamber 20b, 20c a sponge 67 acting as a flow restrictor, and two parallel bushings 63, one leading to each eye 64. Small plugs 69 in the bushings 63 further restrict the flow of water. Each eye 64 forms a chamber C connected through small holes (73) Fig 4 (not shown) at each side to a socket. chamber 72 receiving the eye. The front of each socket chamber 72 is oval in shape, leaving a very small hole at each outer corner (75), Fig 1 (not shown), through which drops of water emerge as simulated tears. Alternatively, each eye may have a small central hole for drops to emerge. If the doll is instead placed on its stomach weeping will still occur, water flowing directly out of the eyes 64 which are now below the level of the reservoir 47. In either case, restoring the doll to the vertical position shown stops weeping, the weight 70 no longer squeezing the flexible reservoir 47. A rubber band 72 around the weight 70 silences movement of the latter within the doll.
